Jason Lucas was born and raised in the vast and open surroundings of southeast Alaska. As a child he was engulfed in rich masses of color, texture and overwhelming landscapes. The calming nature of Alaska influenced his adventures in the arts and directs the vision of his pieces as an adult. The balance, calm and quiet of Alaska has provided the basis for his work.
At the age of eighteen Jason moved to Arizona to attend the American Institute of Interior Design. After graduating he worked a briefly in Scottsdale, Arizona specializing in residential design and interior decorating. His passion for the arts and creativity was redirected towards decorative finishing.
In 1999, after studying under several of the industry’s most highly respected artisans, Jason started Deshu Design, Inc. - a decorative finishing company. Subsequently, he moved to Denver, Colorado to instruct classes and manage contracting for The Faux Finish Institute. Working with so many accomplished artists from all over further inspired him to develop new and innovative approaches to decorative finishing.
Jason began creating works of art by converting his knowledge of plasters and stain systems from walls to canvas. The result is a combination of random fractures, textures, stains and simple forms. In 2002, he began exhibiting and selling his work, which has been featured in multiple local and national publications.
While viewing Jason’s work one continues to rediscover it through the subtle layers, textures and washes inspired from a place of calm. It is not intended to display a specific message or statement as much as simply demand an enjoyable atmosphere through simple lines, shapes and colors; a place of Zen - easily understood and elementary from a distance, but continually rediscovered and invented when more closely examined.
Jason continues to live and work in Denver as an award winning decorative surface artist.
